First 2,000 days shape a lifetime: New investment into proven parenting program empowers Kiwi parents

Kiwi whānau will soon have free access to Triple P − Positive Parenting Programme’s evidence-based, easy-to-use resources to help build happy, healthy children following new funding from the New Zealand government, announced today by Hon. Louise Upston, Minister for Child Poverty Reduction.

Triple P New Zealand Country Manager and psychologist Jackie Riach, said the funding supports the objectives of the Child and Youth Strategy and ensures families across the country can access Triple P’s proven-to-work strategies to support children’s emotional wellbeing and coping skills, benefiting them now and into the future.

The first 2,000 days of a child’s life are critical to their social, emotional and academic outcomes, with parents as the most powerful influence on that development. That’s exactly why having easily accessible, trusted parenting resources early in the parenting journey is vital,” Ms Riach said.

It’s about equipping parents and caregivers with a kete of positive strategies that help raise strong, resilient children, she said.

Ms Riach said that the need for support has never been greater, with families experiencing increased anxiety and stress amidst growing financial pressures and global uncertainty.

At a time when many parents and caregivers are feeling overwhelmed, programmes like Triple P provide practical tools to help them stay calm, build confidence, and support their children, she said.

“Being a parent is incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with challengesfrom bedtime struggles to screen time concerns, anxiety, and bullying,” Ms Riach said. “No matter what stage of the parenting journey you’re at, or the make-up of your family, you’re not alone.”

“Triple P doesn’t tell parents what to do but equips them with proven strategies to use in ways that work for their own families,” said Jackie. Parents who do Triple P consistently report feeling calmer, more confident, and better able to understand their children.”

Triple P has already delivered positive outcomes for thousands of families in New Zealand and millions of parents and caregivers in over 30 countries for more than 40 years.
