NAIDOC Week 2025: supporting strong futures for kids

This NAIDOC Week (6 to 13 July), the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program is encouraging families across Australia to connect while celebrating 50 years of recognising the culture, strength, and achievements of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, the world's oldest continuous living cultures.

Triple P's Cultural Consultant, Michell Forster said this year's theme, 'The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy', inspires parents, carers and communities to nurture strength, build resilience, and lay a foundation of support that empowers the next generation to walk with confidence and pride.

As parents and carers, regardless of who we are or where we come from, we all have the unique opportunity to guide our young ones.”

“Children may be curious about NAIDOC Week, especially if they’ve been learning about it at school. Take the time to listen and talk with your child about it. Encourage them to share any stories, songs, or ideas they’ve come across. Kids love sharing what they’ve learned, and these conversations create space for connection and deeper understanding.”

You don’t need to have all the answers, rather by being open to listening, asking questions, and learning together, it can have a lasting impact on your child or young person and allows you to connect for a stronger relationship,” she said.

Michell encourages families to explore everyday activities that can be weaved easily into daily routines to spark meaningful discussions.

"Find a children's book by a First Nations author and read it together as part of your bedtime routine. It's a calm, engaging way to learn together and boosts your bonding time," Ms Forster said.

"Spend time together watching family-friendly short films, animations, or music clips created by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists. These shared experiences can start conversations and help children see and hear First Nations voices in action."

“Families may like to get involved in local events like a community picnic, art workshop, performance, or story time. These free, family-friendly activities are a great way to show support and feel part of something special."

"This milestone year is about celebrating the next generation. By engaging with NAIDOC Week as a family, we're helping them understand their place in this amazing ongoing story," Ms Forster said.
