At Brookfield State School in Queensland, Deputy Principal Leah plays a vital role in supporting students, families, and teachers—particularly in the crucial early years of schooling.
With her deep experience in education and leadership, she sees her role as the essential layer of support that helps students and families thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
“In our school context, I work heavily across the early years, from Prep to Year 2,” Leah explains.
“Classroom teachers are the day-to-day connection for families and students, but when there’s a need for additional support—emotional, academic, behavioural, or social—we step in to walk alongside them on that journey.”
That belief in early intervention and holistic support is what first led Leah to explore the potential of partnering with the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. Having known of Triple P in passing from her own parenting years, she saw a deeper value in the program as an educator.
“My passion has always been in early years education. The more I stepped into leadership, the more I saw how early intervention can be life-changing. Triple P aligned perfectly with what I wanted to achieve—helping families navigate challenges in ways that support children’s success in school and life.”
Leah says the structured, evidence-based nature of Triple P has made it a practical and empowering tool in her role. “It gave me a really clear framework and process to follow. It helped me realise that just being present and listening is powerful. I really honed that skill—listening with intention—and Triple P supported that shift.”
One of the most helpful tools for Leah has been the extensive range of Triple P tip sheets.
“They are incredibly valuable. When a parent comes in and shares a concern—whether it’s around behaviour, routines at home, or bigger family dynamics—it removes the pressure on me to have all the answers. I can offer something that’s well-researched, practical, and recognised globally. It’s not just my opinion—it’s a resource that can really help.”
Triple P's focus on self-regulation, decision-making, and emotional wellbeing fits neatly with the values of Brookfield State School. Leah often shares Triple P’s updates through the school’s weekly newsletter and sees firsthand how much it resonates with families.
“In our last issue, my deputy colleague shared an article on screen time, and we linked directly to the Triple P Hub. It aligned so well with our school’s messages about responsibility, respect, and safety,” Leah says.
“It helps families engage with issues that, while not part of the school curriculum, are essential to raising capable, resilient children.”
The real strength of Triple P, according to Leah, is how it supports families in a non-judgmental way.
“Some parents are navigating the early stages of seeking external support or assessments for their children. These resources offer a starting point—they open up thinking and conversations in a way that’s empowering, not overwhelming.”
The accessibility of Triple P materials is another benefit Leah appreciates. “I don’t need to go searching or pretend I have expert knowledge in every area. I can just reach for a tip sheet or resource and know it’s backed by solid research and designed to help.”
Leah encourages all educators—not just those in leadership roles—to explore Triple P training.
“It’s relevant at any level. Whether you're in the classroom every day or working with families more broadly, Triple P gives you tools that make a real difference.”
She’s also excited about new partnerships, including Triple P’s collaboration with Life Education. “We’re a strong advocate school for Life Ed programs, so seeing Triple P team up with them is incredibly exciting. It’s another step toward building a whole ecosystem of support for our students.”
In Leah’s view, Triple P is more than a parenting program—it’s a resource that strengthens the vital connections between school and home. “When families feel supported, and we’re all speaking a similar language, children thrive. That’s what we’re here for.”
