Life Ed Queensland: Boosting community impact with Triple P

Meet Sue Osmond from the pioneering health education organisation, Life Ed Queensland.

For more than 37years, Life Ed Queensland has been at the forefront of empowering young minds to make safe and healthier choices with the help of their iconic mascot, Healthy Harold the Giraffe.

Empowering children to make good choices has always been their core mission, and they also know impactful learning starts at home.

“There was a growing sense that we needed to expand our reach to support parents, carers, and families,” Sue said.

“Also, many of our communities were reaching out to us, asking if there was anything we could do to support families beyond our school visits with young people.”

So, when Sue and the Life Ed team saw an opportunity to extend their support beyond the classroom directly into family homes, they seized it.

That’s when Triple P became part of their education offering and helped to widen their community impact.

Thanks to Queensland Government funding, Life Ed Queensland staff trained in various Triple P programs, and soon began delivering Raising Resilient Children and Fear-Less seminars to parent groups in schools throughout Queensland.

Sue said, “It is very important to us that Life Ed’s approach is evidence-based, so with Triple P’s global reputation, we knew we had found a program partnership to strengthen our own social impact. By supporting parents, we can achieve better outcomes for children.”

According to Sue, the Triple P training was thorough and allowed for plenty of practice in delivering sessions and being able to answer questions using the self-regulatory model.

“At times, two presenters were conducting the training. I liked that as it balanced the content, created variety, and made it easier to digest the course information,” Sue said.

Triple P complements Life Ed’s focus

Increasingly, the educators at Life Ed Queensland are focused on equipping young people with emotional regulation skills and the ability to problem-solve independently. Now with Triple P, parents can support their children in developing these important life skills.

Sue said, “Our resilience focus is so important to help build a solid foundation for mental health and relationships for young people. By delivering Triple P, we can ensure parents are on this same journey.”

“I particularly love how the Raising Resilient Children and Fear-Less seminars complements the work we are doing with children.”

Positive community impact

The collaboration with Triple P has been a game-changer for Life Ed Queensland, particularly in its community impact.

Sue said, “It sends a strong message that we care for our families and want to support them to develop more strategies and confidence in their own parenting abilities. I see it as building a stronger community. The calm, thoughtful, respectful focus on establishing and maintaining positive relationships within the family benefits everyone.”

And it is working! Parents surveyed by Life Ed Queensland said they found the seminar helpful in understanding what they could do to improve behaviour and help their child learn new skills.

“After our Triple P sessions, parents consistently tell us they feel reassured that most of the time they are on the right track. They appreciate the content is delivered in a non-judgmental way and they can implement some of the strategies right away.”

Triple P's comprehensive resources, such as tipsheets, have also proven invaluable in helping families implement positive parenting strategies.

“When attendees say they have a partner at home who might be a bit reluctant to try new parenting strategies, I will often suggest they leave the tipsheets in strategic places around the house,” Sue said.

“Sometimes, allowing someone to read and digest the tips for themselves is a less obtrusive way to share the content.”

Looking ahead, Sue highly recommends other agencies to train in Triple P.

“The program allows organisations to support families by providing evidence-based strategies. It gives staff the tools to provide effective advice to families, which in turn, empowers them to help their families,” she said.
